| The objective of this booklet is to facilitate the early recognition and treatment of ‘tick-diseases’ by providing information to doctors as well as to patients. Because this information is directed towards both patients and doctors, some of the language is, of necessity, geared towards the medical profession rather than towards the layman. Although Lyme-disease is the only relevant tick-transmitted disease in the Netherlands in respect to frequency, this booklet also gives information concerning other tick-transmitted diseases in Europe, because of the possibility that someone could catch those during a journey outside the Netherlands, with the symptoms becoming manifest once back home.

The role of Saag |
||
Since this SAAG-booklet was first published in its present form in 1997, more than 415,000 copies have been printed. This alone attests to its importance. The ‘Lyme-borreliosis’ directives were presented by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) in 2003. These directives were composed by a team that, apart from medical experts, consisted of representatives of the Dutch Union of Lyme-disease patients. The advice of this team has been based on the best possible scientific knowledge. The recommendations of those directives have been adopted in this booklet with only a few textual modifications. The CBO-directives can be found at www.cbo.nl . NB
